Middle School Student Arrested for Bringing Explosive Materials to Campus
An East Whittier Middle School Student was arrested today after bringing explosive materials in the vicinity of the campus. A foiled "last day of school" prank consisted of the juvenile partially filling a two liter bottle with the contents of dozens of firecrackers. The makeshift explosive was then stashed in the bushes surrounding a church located just west of the campus on Catalina Avenue. In an effort to curtail last day of school pranks, campus security was searching the school grounds and surrounding areas for contraband when they discovered the 14-year-old's backpack containing the bottle and his middle school yearbook. Whittier PD was quickly contacted and the device was ultimately rendered safe and collected by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad. No evacuations were necessary and the Whittier juvenile was arrested for possession of bomb making materials at approximately 11:00am. He was ultimately released to his parents.
