Subject: Whittier PD Takes “Zero Tolerance” Enforcement Towards Fireworks

Whittier, CA. – The Whittier Police Department will be stepping up its enforcement efforts over the 4th of July weekend in an effort to minimize property damage and personal injury from fireworks. In April of 2007, the Whittier City Council amended Section 15.16 of the Whittier Municipal Code which now prohibits the manufacturing, possession, sale, and use of ANY firework within city boundaries. This includes “Safe and Sane Fireworks” as well. In 2007, signs prohibiting fireworks were also erected at all major entrances into the city.

Throughout the entire 4th of July weekend, Whittier Police Officers will be taking a “Zero Tolerance” approach towards enforcement of the Whittier Municipal Code by fielding dozens of officers for this explicit purpose. Violators will be criminally prosecuted and may face fines of up to $1000, per the Municipal code. Last year, 29 people were prosecuted for such violations.

Anyone wishing to voluntarily dispose of fireworks may do so anonymously, without fear of penalty, by turning them in at the Whittier Police Department. For further information or questions pertaining to turning in fireworks, contact the Whittier Police Department (562) 945.8250.
