Pursuit Terminates at the Whittwood Town Center

At approximately 5:40 p.m. officers responded to a call of a disturbance inside a vehicle in the north area of town. The victim and her estranged boyfriend were inside the vehicle with their 3 year old child when an argument ensued. The victim attempted to leave the vehicle with her child, however the suspect moved into the driver seat and began to drive off as she exited. The victim was able to get back inside the vehicle to protect her child.

Soon after the incident, officers located the vehicle and attempted to pull it over. The suspect sped away from officers and a pursuit followed. The victim provided information to the Whittier Police Department from the back seat of the car using a cell phone.

After losing the vehicle for a few minutes, citizens informed officers that the suspect drove into the Whittwood Town Center shopping center and fled on foot into the JC Penny department store. Officers surrounded the store and evacuated shoppers and workers. A large number of officers including K9s conducted a search of the store but did not locate the suspect.

The victim and child were located and did not sustain any injuries. The suspect has been identified as Ariel Marcello Otero (46) of Whittier.
