On September 13th at 8:41 pm, a 19-year-old Whittier resident, came to the lobby of the Whittier Police Department to report an assault with a deadly weapon and terrorist threats made against him that had occurred in the area of 16200 Janine Drive. Officers learned that the victim and his father had argued during the afternoon. The victim was struck several times by his father but not injured. At one point however, the father removed a pump-action shotgun from a wall rack, cocked it, aimed it at the victim and threatened to kill him. The victim was able to get away from his father and he armed himself with a knife, which he placed in his pocket. As the argument continued, the father apparently became aware of the knife and hit the victim in the face, causing him to pass out. When the victim came to, his father had the knife pointed at the victim and threatened again to kill him. When the victim told his father he was going to the hospital, his father said that if anyone (i.e. police) came to the house, he would shoot them. LA Co Fire paramedics responded to examine the victim and he was transported to Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital on a precautionary basis. The victim’s girlfriend was in the residence during the incident and overheard the father rack the shotgun. Later, she received text messages from the father reiterating his intent to kill anyone who came to the house. The victim stated his father had outside video surveillance cameras and monitors them.
Ultimately, Officers responded to the address but the father did not answer phone calls into the residence. Eventually, the suspect exited the house and was arrested. Michael Yanez, 42 years old, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, terrorist threats, and brandishing a firearm.
