Today the officers and civilian employees of the Whittier Police Department said goodbye to Lt. Mike Roy. He has retired from the department after 27 years and 7 months of distinguish service.
In a way, you could say his family has also retired from the police department. As everyone knows the police operate 24 hours a day- 365 days a year- we never close. What many people don't think about or realize is what a tremendous sacrifice the officer’s family must make.
In many cases the officer’s family celebrates their holidays alone, while the officer is working. It means they live through shift work, which requires the officer’s family to be alone at night while the officer is working to keep the city and community safe. So today both Lt. Roy and his family retired. I am sure they will both enjoy spending holidays together and living a life that is a little more normal, with Mike sleeping at night instead of driving the streets looking for crime.
We wish his family and him the best of luck and hope they enjoy a long and happy retirement.
