Rash of daytime burglaries prompts police warnings

From the Whittier Daily News....

SANTA FE SPRINGS - Due to a recent spate of daytime home burglaries, city officials are telling residents how to avoid becoming the next victim.

The Department of Police Services called residents and also put out fliers at city facilities like City Hall and the senior center last week.

The flier tells people to secure garages, windows and doors, keep shrubbery cut low and not too dense around doors and windows, and encourage neighbors who are home during the day to call police if they see any suspicions person, cars or activity.

"We just want people to be aware in case they see (these) individuals and to call us," said Dino Torres, assistant to the director of police services.

Torres said the department made close to 2,000 calls, adding that it was the first time they used the phone tree system for this type of notification.

The community notice and phone calls to residents are a response to five recent residential burglaries. The suspects are described as two black men and one black woman.

Whittier police spokesman Officer Jason Zuhlke said there were three burglaries in April and two in May that happened in different parts of the city. Santa Fe Springs contracts for police services with Whittier.

He said the modus operandi is the same; the suspects were able to slip locks and open doors. The burglars took cash and jewelry.

The suspects used different vehicles for the burglaries but were seen
in a red maroon Toyota Camry with paper plates at one of the break-ins.

Zuhlke said the first burglary happened April 29 in the 11700 block of Parkmead Street, where cash kept under a mattress was taken. A neighbor noticed the Camry backed into the driveway with a woman in the driver's seat and later saw two men run out of the house.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Services Center at (562) 409-1850.

Two men held in alleged vandalism

From the Whittier Daily News...

WHITTIER - Two Whittier men were arrested on felony vandalism charges after what police said was an early-morning spree on Whittier Boulevard that included uprooting saplings, knocking over trashcans and seriously damaging three new vehicles at the Harris automobile dealership.

Anthony Sanchez and Johnny Reyna, both in their 20s, were taken into custody about 2 a.m., Whittier police Lt. Bryan Ellis said Saturday.

Police got reports of two men damaging trees and trashcans on Whittier Boulevard, Ellis said, and when officers arrived on the scene Sanchez and Reyna fitted the descriptions the callers had given.

"At the time the officers responding didn't know about the damage to the vehicles," which they later connected to Sanchez and Reyna, Ellis said.

The windshields of the three vehicles were smashed and the bodywork had been "hit repeatedly with stepping stones" probably picked up from the ground nearby, Ellis said.

Mark Johnson, manager of Harris Buick Pontiac GMC at 13617 Whittier Blvd., said the vehicles damaged were two new GMC trucks and a Pontiac Solstice. He estimated the damage to the windshields and bodywork at "somewhere in the $5,000 to $6,000 range."
Johnson said the vehicles were inside the lot's gated area.

"Late Bloomer Bandit" in Custody

Whittier Police Detectives arrested 52 year-old Martin Ridgeway on Wednesday in conjunction with three robberies committed over the last two months; the first being on March 28th inside the Ralph's supermarket on Painter Avenue and Whittier Boulevard. Once inside the Ralph's, Ridgeway approached the Union Bank and demanded cash while simulating a handgun in his waistband. After talking to police, witnesses described Ridgeway as an older White male with grey hair; a description that proved consistent in subsequent robberies.

Not wasting any time, Ridgeway struck the Banco Popular inside the Wal-Mart in Pico Rivera the next day using a similar M.O.. Then, on April 16th, Ridgeway made his final stop at the Banco Popular inside Wal-Mart in Santa Fe Springs. This time however, good witness statements coupled with a partial license plate kept Whittier Detectives hot on Ridgeway's trail. Following investigative leads, Detectives arrived at a residence in the county area of Whittier where they found a silver 2000 Hyundai Tiburon that matched the vehicle description. Further investigation of the residence revealed a white male in his 50’s with a history of robbery; this would prove to be Ridgeway.

Using an old booking photo, Detectives presented “line-up’s” to victims and witnesses in all three robberies and Ridgeway was positively identified as the culprit. After bolstering their case further, Detectives made their move yesterday at 2:30pm, arresting Ridgeway after pulling him over in his Hyundai. A search warrant was then served at Ridgeway’s place of residence that uncovered additional incriminating evidence.

After robbing three banks of approximately $4000, Ridgeway now faces Federal prosecution as the case attracted the attention of the FBI. Ridgeway is currently in custody at the Whittier Police Department with $100,000 bail.

WHITTIER POLICE DEPARTMENT CRACKING DOWN ON BUCKLING UP

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Name: Sgt. D. Lowe
DATE: May 9, 2008 Agency: Whittier Police Department
Phone: (562) 945-8256
e-mail: dlowe@cityofwhittier.org

Whittier, Calif. - The Whittier Police Department will be aggressively enforcing the state's occupant protection laws as part of California's 2008 Click It or Ticket mobilization, taking place May 12-June 1. The campaign relies on heavy enforcement and public education as a means to help California achieve the highest seat belt use rate in the nation. California currently has the nation's fourth highest seat belt use rate at 94.6 percent.

"We want to make sure that all drivers and passengers buckle up on every ride, day and night," said Police Chief David Singer. "Our officers will be on the lookout for those who are not buckled up and for teens and children not riding properly restrained. We will not accept excuses or give warnings. It's Click It or Ticket."

California has a primary seat belt law which requires that every passenger in the car, including the driver, is required to wear a seat belt at all times. If stopped and found to be in violation, law enforcement will issue citations without warning. Tickets for first seat belt violations range from $80 to $91 for adults and $330 to $401 for children under age 16, depending on the county.

"We're doing well with nearly 95 percent buckling up, fourth highest in the nation," said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. "That's 1.5 million more people protected from death and injury by using seatbelts since the Click It or Ticket campaign started in 2005. But we can do better yet. I urge everyone to always buckle up."

While the buckle up rate for adults has continued to climb in recent years, California's teen seat belt use rate lags behind the general population. In 2007, California's teen seat belt use rate was 88.9 percent, well below the state rate of 94.6 percent for the same year.

Rail Road Worker Killed in Train Accident

Santa Fe Springs - On May 7th at 12:45 pm, 24-year-old Xavier Arriaga of Hisperia was struck and killed by an Amtrak Train in the intersection of Valley View Avenue and Stage Road. Employed by "A-CECO," a private rail road company, Xavier, along with 4 of his co-workers were maintaining one of three tracks running through the area. While the track he was working on was closed, the two others that parallel it were active.

As the Pacific Surfliner #774 approached traveling southbound, Xavier was operating a piece of equipment used to compact newly laid asphalt. Feeling the machinery was to close to the adjacent track, Xavier began moving the tool by turning his body and back away from the train. While doing so, a ladder on the side of the train, used for boarding struck Xavier as the train traveled at approximately 77 miles per hour. He was then pulled under the train and came to rest approximately 30 feet away. Deputies from LACO Sheriff's Department were first on scene before it was ultimately released to the Whittier Police Department for investigation. Representatives from Amtrak, BNSF, Cal-OSHA, and the Los Angeles County Coroners Office would assist in the investigation.

Felony Taggers in Custody

At 1:00am on today's date, a Whittier Police Officer was patrolling to the rear of 10445 Slusher Avenue when he came upon a group of taggers spray painting the wall of a business that backs up to the rail road tracks. The Officer then co-ordinated assisting units and the suspects were soon surrounded. One suspect used a ladder and was on the roof plying his skills when Officers flushed three others into the waiting arms of Officers and, out of breath, they quickly surrendered. The fourth suspect eluded apprehension by jumping off a 30’ wall, wrestling with an Officer and sprinting away. He was later captured at his home in Pico Rivera and charged with felony vandalism and resisting arrest. All were adults and from either Montebello or Pico Rivera. The arrestees were identified as Jose Trujillo (4/5/87), Michael Padua (3/5/84), Christopher Mariz (5/7/86), and Steven Faustinos (5/6/86).

Suspects Saught in Attempted Murder

At 9:00 pm on Sunday May 4th, four friends and family members were standing in front of their home in the 13200 block of Oval Drive when a white Ford Probe with two gang type occupants pulled up next to the house. The passenger of the vehicle then asked the residents “where they were from,” implying a gang affiliation. After the residents failed to reciprocate, the passenger began to fire four rounds from a small caliber handgun at all four of the residents. One of the rounds struck the abdomen of the 19-year-old victim, Yehuri Rodriguez and he was later transported to a local hospital where he immediately underwent surgery. Rodriguez is currently in stable condition and is expected to survive. While unconfirmed, Detectives are exploring gang rivalry as a possible motivation for the shooting.

Police Respond in Force to Threat of Violence at East Whittier Middle School

Over 25 Whittier Police Officers responded to East Whittier Middle School today (October 31st) in response to a threat of violence against its students. At 1:00pm, an unknown caller phoned the Whittier Daily News with disturbing information. According to the reporter who took the call, a “male adult in his 30’s,” began telling him that three “skinheads” he saw at a party the evening prior, were claiming they would proceed to East Whittier Middle School to “shoot it up.” The caller claimed the three “skinheads” were brandishing AK-47 assault rifles and claiming the attack would be carried out towards the end of the school day. The caller, who was reluctant to give any further information, then ended the call.

Immediately after the call ended, the reporter contacted the Whittier Police Department and within minutes, officers began to arrive at the school. As time progressed, additional officers, including the Whittier Police Department’s Tactical Entry Team, arrived in force as a precautionary measure. With an absence of any threat, the decision was made to dismiss the students as usual at 1:30pm; this occurred without incident. A short while thereafter, the remaining faculty members left the campus and the premises were closed without incident.

Speaking to faculty and East Whittier City School District officials, officers learned there have been no previous threats of violence against the school or its students by way of phone or facsimile. Furthermore, there have been no acts of violence involving students, nor is the student body comprised of anyone teachers would classify as “skinheads.”

Nevertheless, the Whittier Police Department and East Whittier City School District, takes any such threat of violence with the utmost seriousness. Furthermore, investigators will be exploring all means of investigation to uncover who may have made such a threat. Lastly, as a precautionary measure, Whittier Police Officers will be posted at the school for the duration of the week.

Whitttier police seize 42 pounds of marijuana

WHITTIER - Police found nearly $34,000 worth of marijuana last night in the trunks of two cars with Mexico license plates in the parking lot a Whittier hotel.

Three suspects were arrested for the transportation and selling of marijuana, said Sgt. Dominic Iraldo, and both cars were impounded.

Mexican nationals Ebiel Manzanillo, 35, Jose Torres, 25, and Elias Valdez, 40, are being held in Whittier jail, Corrections Officer Pauline Nava said.

Around 8:05 p.m. Thursday, an officer saw a group of suspicious people outside of the Good Night Inn, at 10317 Whittier Blvd.

"While talking to them, he saw a small brick of marijuana in plain view," Iraldo said. The officer then looked into the two vehicles, and found two large containers with nearly 42 pounds of marijuana.

"This has been the largest amount found by a patrol officer in a few years," Iraldo said.

Though it is hard to determine the street value of the marijuana, Iraldo estimated that an ounce costs about $50, and a pound goes for about $800.

Narcotics officers are still investigating.

Flag burning erupts in Whittier neighborhood

WHITTIER - Vandals burned nearly a dozen flags in the southeast part of the city over a five-week period, authorities said Thursday.

Detective Jared Burns of the Whittier Police Department said 11 flags were partially charred - six American flags and five garden banners. All the burnings occurred in the same residential area near the Whittwood Town Center, he said.

The neighborhood hit is bounded by Whittier Boulevard to the north, Lambert Road to the south, Santa Gertrudes Avenue to the east and Colima Road to the west.

Burns said police have few leads but believe the perpetrator may be driving a gray or white pickup truck.
"Residents should be vigilant," Burns said. "If they see or hear anything suspicious, give the police a call."

Tami Wysocki, who lives on Jupiter Street with her husband and children, said the American flag in front of her home was charred and melted about three weeks ago. "If I caught them, I'd wring their little necks," Wysocki said. "Obviously, it can be a bit dangerous."

A new flag already flies in place of the Wysockis' charred one. Wysocki said she is not afraid of vandalism, but that her family is watching their home more closely. "My husband was really upset," Wysocki said. "He's very patriotic." Wysocki said her family did not file a police report about the flag incident.

Another woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said her American flag had been burned three times. Her home also sustained other vandalism, she said.

Wysocki said she had heard that some houses had also been tagged with lipstick and the moniker "Joker," though she did not know if the incidents were connected. According to Burns, the flags were hanging in front of houses. The burnings began Aug. 4, with the last one on Sept. 12, he said.

Burns warned that residents should not confront vandals, but rather should report any incidents to police. Although most burnings have caused only minor damage and danger, Burns also said to follow basic fire safety. "It it's something that they would deem is of a serious nature, they would definitely want to contact the Fire Department," Burns said.

Residents who were attacked by the vandals said they will be ready if it happens again.
"We're definitely going to put surveillance out," Wysocki said. "I want to catch them."

To report information on flag burnings, call the Whittier Police Department at (562) 945-8271.

Two Suspects Arrested for an Alleged Scam

WHITTIER - With help from an angry grandson, police arrested two men Wednesday for allegedly trying to scam elderly drivers.

When Chamber of Commerce President Chris George got a call from his 90-year-old grandmother that two men had tried to cheat her, he and a friend went searching and found the suspects with another victim.

And his information later helped police officers locate the suspects, officials said.
George said his grandmother, Della, left the Ralphs parking lot Wednesday morning and was on a side street when two men flagged her down. They said her wheel was coming off and her Toyota Camry was smoking, he added.

They said it would cost her thousands to fix, which they could do cheaper.
Whittier police Officer Diana Salazar said the men presented themselves as Toyota certified mechanics and offered to call for the victim. They pretended to call the dealership and told her the dealer was busy. They also pretended to call AAA for her.

The two men offered to take her car to the dealer for her, George, 36, said. His grandmother later went to the nearby Toyota dealership, called him and relayed what happened.
"She was very distraught," George said, adding that he told her she got scammed and to go home. He said he got upset and, accompanied by a friend, went looking for the con artists at Ralphs. They drove around the parking lot and area but found no one. On a final search, they spotted the suspects with another victim by the recycling area.

"Her car was jacked up and her wheel was off her car. I called the police again and said, `It's happening right now,"' George said. He and his friend approached the culprits.
"They were getting close to her. I didn't want anything happening to the lady," he said.
He told her she was getting scammed. One of the suspects put the tire back on the car.
"They said, `We're Christians. ... good Samaritans,"' George said. He reminded the men they told his grandmother they were Toyota mechanics.

One of the suspects walked to a nearby gas station. The other left in an Infinity G35 with Washington license plates.

Officers pulled over the Infinity at Cole Road, south of Whittier Boulevard.
Michael C. Dennis, 25, of Long Beach and Tony Marks, 27, of West Covina were booked on suspicion of attempted vehicle theft and theft from an elder adult. They were being held at Whittier police jail and will be arraigned Friday at Whittier Court, officials said.
Salazar said Dennis has outstanding warrants for elder theft.
Police know of at least three victims.

The first Whittier victim was an 82-year-old woman. She called police Tuesday about two men who flagged her down and said she had car problems. They told her they were mechanics and offered to repair it for less than a dealer, Salazar said. She declined their offer and left.
"She thought it odd," Salazar said. The second victim was George's grandmother, and the third was the driver found with the suspects by the recycling area.

Police suspect there may be more victims. Anyone with information on the case should call Whittier police at (562) 945-8250 and ask for the Detective Bureau.

Councilwoman Cathy Warner, a friend of George, praised him for coming to the rescue.
"As far as I am concerned, he was very courageous to go back there and spot these guys so they could arrest them," she said.

George said this issue was personal. "They're messing with my grandmother," he said. "That's why I went after them."

Thieves Smash Car Into the CVS Pharmacy

WHITTIER - Thieves using a stolen car smashed through the front doors of a pharmacy Wednesday and grabbed a large quantity of a cold remedy used to make methamphetamine.
The incident at CVS Pharmacy at 12560 Whittier Blvd. resembles a similar theft in Anaheim that occurred early Tuesday, said Diana Salazar, the Whittier police spokeswoman.
"We got an alarm call at 2:20 a.m.," Salazar said. "Officers discovered that a large quantity of pseudoephedrine, a cold remedy had been taken. ... It's used to cook methamphetamine."
No prescription medications appeared to be missing, Salazar said

Although the federal Drug Enforcement Administration is not investigating the theft, or the similar one that occurred in Anaheim, a spokeswoman said Wednesday that the agency was monitoring both cases.

"This is unusual, anytime there is a theft of pseudoephedrine it would cause some alarm," said DEA Special Agent Sarah Pullen. "It will definitely cause us to look into these cases to see if there are other similar crimes or organizations this ties into."
The Nissan Sentra, which was used to smash through the front doors of the pharmacy, appeared to be stolen from Anaheim, Salazar said.

Police officials recovered surveillance video from the store that indicates two people were involved in the theft. Salazar said the video would be released after it is reviewed by detectives.
The Anaheim robbery occurred Tuesday at 12:28 a.m., officials said. In the incident, a car smashed through the doors of a CVS Pharmacy at 1660 West Katella Ave., authorities said.
A white Toyota Camry station wagon was left behind. By Wednesday afternoon, police were unable to locate the vehicle's owner, Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez said.
Anaheim detectives also recovered a videotape of the theft. It reportedly shows a man and woman committing the crime.

"They took a quantity of pseudoephedrine, Claritin and nasal decongestant," Martinez said. "The couple ran out of the store leaving the vehicle behind."
The pair jumped into a waiting red compact car and drove off. It is not clear from the surveillance tape if the red car was the same used in the Whittier robbery, Martinez said.
The suspects in the Anaheim robbery were described as a possibly Latino man, with a moustache, dark hair, wearing a brown shirt and blue jeans and a woman described only as being of medium build.
